AHEC Scholars Program

RESIDENTS & STUDENTS IN HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONS

Participants will receive 40 hours of training
(both clinical and didactic for a total of 80 hours)
each year of the program and will interact with other AHEC Scholars across Alabama.

The online classroom activities will utilize an online platform such as:
  • Google Classroom
  • Kaizen game application
  • Book of the Year forum

Clinical training experiences will be interprofessional with at least one other healthcare discipline in an effort to better prepare health professional students to enter the workforce as part of a team.

For our post-secondary, health professions students, who are currently enrolled in a two-year or longer degree or certification program, the Alabama Statewide AHEC Program is in the development phase for an interdisciplinary program called AHEC Scholars.


NAAHEC launched the program in September 2018 for the following disciplines:
  • Medical
  • Nursing
  • Social work or pharmacy

The program offers curriculum designed for students to focus on six core topics that are critical for our future workforce:

  1. Interprofessional Education (IPE) or Team-Based Training
  2. Behavioral Health
  3. Social Determinants of Health
  4. Cultural Competency as part of Patient-Centered Care
  5. Practice Transformation
  6. Current and Emerging Health Issues. ​
Facilitates the clinical training of health professions students and residents towards primary care through clinical rotations for:
  •       Medical students and residents
  •       Nurse Practitioners
  •       Physician Assistants
  •       Dentists
  •       and others in clinical rotations
Provides funding assistance for housing and mileage reimbursement.

High and Middle school students 

Pipeline Program 

  • Provide exciting classroom presentations that promote and educate students on health careers.
  • Offer fun, hands on activities and displays for on campus events - college and career fairs, health fairs, etc.
  • Sponsor summer enrichment program – CampLEAP – and assist students find other relevant experiences.
  • Arrange science related excursions and learning opportunities (i.e. job shadowing, hospital visits, college health program tours)
  • Promote and support the local HOSA organizations and health science programs.

Exciting classroom presentations that promote and educate students on health careers.

Camp Leap   (Learning Everything About Patients) Summer Enrichment program is a 5-day residential health careers exploration experience. 
It is designed for high school students who have an interest in learning about health professions.  Through intensive and interactive activities students experience basic health skills training, anatomy lab dissections, and other fun/educational workshops.​​
