AHEC Scholars

The AHEC Scholars Program is a two-year, interdisciplinary leadership training opportunity for post-secondary health profession students enrolled in professional degreed programs Medicine (MD/DO), Dentistry, Clinical Psychology (PhD), Physician Assistant, Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Midwifery, Pharmacy, and Optometry.

Participants will receive 40 hours of training (both clinical and didactic for a total of 80 hours) each year of the program and will interact with other AHEC Scholars across Alabama.

AHEC Scholars engage in team-based clinical experiences providing care to vulnerable and underserved patients in settings like homeless shelters, free clinics, community health centers, health fairs, and more.

A $1500* stipend is available for two-year commitment.

*($500 for year one; $1000 for year two)

Health Careers Pathways

North Alabama AHEC inspires the next generation of health professionals through interactive classroom presentations, engaging campus events, and hands-on activities at college and career fairs. We sponsor Camp LEAP, a dynamic summer enrichment program, and coordinate professional learning experiences such as job shadowing, hospital tours, and college health program visits. We also proudly support local HOSA chapters and health science programs to further encourage student interest in healthcare careers.

AHEC’s Community-Based Educational Training program works to pair health care students with providers to serve as their preceptors for clinical rotations. We partner with providers in our local communities especially those found in health professional shortage areas (HPSA).

We offer assistance with:

Preceptor Apprenticeship

Housing Reimbursements (while fulfilling rural rotations)

Rural Mileage Reimbursement (while fulfilling rural rotations)

Continuing Education

Through various partnerships from time to time we offer continuing education credits to our dedicated health professionals. Generally these are offered with no or minimal fees. See those currently available below.

Safe and Effective Pain Care: A Comprehensive Guide for Opioid Prescribing in Primary Care

GWEP Longitudinal Clinical Rotations/Student Education

The Longitudinal Clinical Rotation (LCR) Program connects students, residents, and fellows with meaningful, hands-on learning experiences in Tribal, underserved, and rural communities. Participants spend at least eight weeks each year working alongside local healthcare providers in primary care settings, including nursing homes, where they help care for older adults and other vulnerable populations.
